Hoa Binh - Mai Chau
Hoa Binh is a mountainous province in the North. It is bordered by Phu Tho and Ha Tay in the north, Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa in the south, Ha Nam in the east, and Son La in the west.
 
The topography is combined by mountains and narrow valleys. The annual average temperature varies between 23 and 25�C.
The culture of Hoa Binh combines several ethnic groups with their own languages, traditional literature, and festivals.

Tourists especially enjoy the ethnic specialty dishes including rice cooked in bamboo and grilled meat. At night, visitors can stay in stilt houses at Lac Village in Mai Chau Valley, enjoy watching traditional dancing, music performances (bronze drums, gongs), and Thai minority singing and dancing. The remote Muong, Dao, Tay minority villages draw visitors who like study the life of ethnic groups. Beautiful brocade and forest products are interesting souvenirs.

Mountainous terrain with Thac Bo, Hoa Tien grottoes, Ret Cave, Pu Nooc Primitive forest and many clean springs are suitable for swimming, climbing, walking, and hunting. Visitors are also fascinated by superb beauty of Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest one in Vietnam. Boating on Da River is an enjoyable feeling.
 
Apart of these, scientific tests have shown that the mineral water at Kim Boi Hot Spring is good for drinking, bathing and treatment.

Road and water transportation are convenient. There is National Highway No. 6 from Hanoi vie Ha Tay to Hoa Binh, Son La, National Highway No. 15 from Mai Chau to Thanh Hoa, National Highway No. 12B from Hoa Binh to Nho Quan (Ninh Binh).
 
Hoa Binh Town is 82km from Hanoi. Da River is 5km from Hoa Binh City.

1.    Mai Chau, Hoa Binh

Hoa Binh Province is famous for its diverse cultures and breathtaking natural views. Visiting Hoa Binh, tourists often travel Mai Chau, a popular tourist destination in the province.

Travelling 70km from Hanoi to Hoa Binh Township, visitors must travel another 60km from Hoa Binh to arrive in Mai Chau. On the way to Mai Chau, the bus must climb the Cun Slope, which is actually a tall pass and mostly engulfed by clouds. From the top of the pass a beautiful view of Mai Chau District can be enjoyed. The district is a valley of green rice fields with wooden houses built on stilts. Mai Chau has a great many villages, such as Lac, Muong, Poom Coong, Van Mai and Xam Khoe, where visitors can have a good time with ethnic groups: Thai, Muong, Dao and Mong. The area provides an excellent opportunity for tourists to learn about the people of different cultures in Hoa Binh Province.

In Lac Village of the Thai ethnic minority people, visitors need to wash their feet before climbing the stairs of the wooded houses. Windows are open to let in the air and also serve as areas where the owner displays other orchids and ornamental birds. Thai women weave their own clothes. A Thai girl's worth is usually measured in the way they make the bed and the floral patterns they sew on pillows and blankets. Thai girls usually choose their man by looking at his house's stilts. Houses with stilts that have big fish scales and tails glued on them are considered ideal as the young man must be good at fishing. Thai dancing and singing is something that visitors can not afford to ignore. The traditional dance show for tourists starts at 8pm and provide a very impressive experience for tourists.

If visitors visit Mai Chau, don't forget to bring home some handicraft such as bags, skirts and backpacks made by Thai girls. Visitors will be sure to impress their friends and relatives.

2.    Kim Boi Hot Spring, Hoa Binh

About 30km drive from Hoa Binh will lead to a rest house named Kim Boi. The house was built near a large mineral water pool. Visitors sitting inside the house can hear the water, which is at a constant temperature of 36°C, continuously spouting out. Scientific tests have shown that the mineral water at Kim Boi is suitable to drink, bathe, and use in the treatment of rheumatism, intestinal diseases, stomachache, and high-blood pressure.

Kim Boi mineral water is bottled for drinking. It has almost the same composition as certain well-known foreign brands of mineral water.

3.    Lac Village in Mai Chau Valley, Hoa Binh

Lac Village is situated In Mai Chau Valley, Hoa Binh Province, approximately 135km from Hanoi and 60km from Hoa Binh City. From the top of Cun Pass, one can admire the superb panorama of Mai Chau surrounded by a green valley and stilt houses. Many minorities, including the Thai ethnic group, live in Lac Village.

Coming to Lac Village, you will see stilt houses border both sides of the roads. The houses are quite large with palm leaf roofs and polished bamboo-slat floors. The kitchen is located in the center of the house; the cooking as well as the making of the colorful tho cam, the material used by Thai minority to make their clothes, takes place in the kitchen. The windows are large and decorated with patterns. Each house also has a pond to breed fish.

The Sunday market brings a lot of people into town. People from different minorities living in the mountains come to Mai Chau market to sell their specific products: honey, bananas, corn, and tho cam made by skilled Thai women. The Sunday market is also an occasion to enjoy traditional Thai dishes and to participate in traditional dances.

4.    Cau Phuc Festival (Praying for good fortune Festival), Hoa Binh

The Praying for good fortune Festival of the Thai is held in the eighth lunar month in Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province. Every family prepares worshipping meal to set table in common shrine follow the principles: this year the offering is chicken, next year the offering is pig. In the afternoon, each family kills two chickens to worship Kitchen God (set in house) and Earth genie (set at field).
