Hai Phong

Hai Phong is northern Vietnam's main port, and an important industrial and commercial center. 105km from Hanoi, Hai Phong is a beautiful city with much of the central colonial quarter still preserved. Many streets are bordered by flame flower trees, giving the city its other name "city of flame flowers". Hai Phong is also a good base for exploring other areas in the northeast such as Cat Ba and Halong Bay.
Attractions in Hai Phong:
1. Cat Ba - Pearl Island
Cat Ba - the pearl island is the well-known archipelago in the whole country with a spectacular array of sea and island scenery, it covers an area of 20,000ha in the North-East of Hai Phong. It takes about one hour by high speed ferry to go to the island, or by land it is about 60 km passing 2 ferries, you will easily reach the pearl island. In the spacious sea, we suddenly see a tropical jungles.
The forests cover over 17,300 ha, including 570ha of primeval forests. Under the old foliages is hundred of rare medicinal trees, there is a tonic tree of one bulb and one leaf only, particularly good for human's heart. Cat Ba has a typically rare flora and fauna of limestone mountain forests, there are also many marvelous grottoes, white sandy and clear water beaches that you can see to sea bed. In old forests there is ancient Komodo varan and chamois species of average weight of over 100kg each. On Cat Ba Island, there are many fishing grounds with shrimps, red snapper, anchovy, trap fish,... and a grass cover to breed tortoise-shells. Cracked stones areas under the sea at the island's foot, there are abalones, pearl-oysters and lobsters. On the shallow tide field, there is Tu hai (mollusca family) that is considered as "sea chicken", its meat is more delicious than abalone. Tu hai grilled with lemon is indispensable special dish in restaurants at the edge of the sea.
On the first of April in 1958, Uncle Ho visited Cat Hai and Cat Ba islands. Cat Ba wharf was a place where he stood to talk with people and army who were living on the islands. Since then, the 1st April - the date when Uncle Ho visited fishing villages - was chosen by fishery industry their traditional anniversary. Every year, on the first of April the dragon boats race of district island and of whole nation fishing industry is held on the sea of Cat Ba.
Beauty-spots in Cat Ba
• Trans-island road: 27km long with many mountain pass, meander cols, slopes, along the sea shore, through National Pack, spectacular array of sea and island scenery.
• Cat Ba National Park: 15 km to the North - West of the town. This Park covers an area of 15,200 ha, including 9,800 ha of forests with splendid grottoes. In tropical and primeval forests, there is a rich fauna and flora. There are 745 species of plants, including various species of rare wood trees so as Tri Ly, Lat Hoa, Lim Set, Gie Hoa, Kim Giao, white wood. Kim Giao chopsticks used to be offered to Kings which can cause bubbles and turn itself into red when touched poisoned food. Cho dai tree that can be found in the old forest is endangered specie named in the Red Book, the only other in the world where we can find this tree is Hymalaya mountain. Cat Ba National Park is home to 20 species of mammals, 69 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles and species of amphibians, species of 11 frogs. Particularly, the rarest animals in the world that can only be found in Viet Nam is Vooc (white faced monkeys). Another strange is Ma Tien fruit, a toxic fruit, if a person eats Ma Tien he will die immediately, but the white-faced Vooc can eat both leaf and fruit to feed themselves.
• Trung Trang Grotto: 15km from the town, close to the trans-island road. There are a lot of beautiful natural stalactites that makes you feel like flying high, visiting the Elysium on earth. The grotto can accommodate hundreds of people.
• Hung Son grotto: 13km from the town, on the trans-island road. Another name is "Army Medical Grotto" because in the sabotaged war by America, an army hospital was built in the grotto with capacity of hundreds of beds in the mountain. This structure wrote feat of arms about courage of people.
• Phu Long Grotto (Cai Vieng): recently found, it is considered more beautiful than Trung Trang grotto. In the grotto, stalactites and moisture steam make us imagine the way to sky, the way to sea, many quintessential vaults, golden mountain, silver mountain...
• Beaches: Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, Cat Dua, Cat Ong, Duong Danh,... are small rainy, secretive, shaded bathing grounds with fine white sand and clear water. A theme park called "Palace under the sea" will be built to enable human to directly observe porpoises, lobsters, sharks, sea tortoises, cutlet-fish,.. slowly wandering near red corals
2. Do Son Beach
With 2,450m of coast with full of fine sand, Do Son beach has been one of the national famous resorts for a long time.
Do Son peninsula situated on the ancient continent, 22.5km in length along the coast from Cam river mouth to Van Uc river mouth. Old people similes Do Son the head of a Dragon directing toward a precious stone (Hon Dau isle), whisking its tail to go to sea that created Bach Long Vi Islands. Traces of pre-historic men have not yet been seen in Do Son but there are a lot of historical relics. The most noticeable ones are Tuong Long tower and Van Ban pagoda which were built in 11th century. Tuong Long tower made of terracotta with 10 storeys on the top of mountain Ngoc Son. Foundation of Tuong Long Tower still exists. Bricks at the tower's foot can be read clearly: "Ly gia de tam de, Long thuy Thai Binh tu nien tao" i.e. the brisk was made in 3rd Ly's Emperor, the fourth year of dynastic titled Long Thuy Thai Binh (King Ly Thanh Tong), it was the year of 1057 according to Calendar. Next to the tower is Van Ban pagoda. There is a bronze bell named Van Ban Bell casted in Tran's dynasty time and it is one of the oldest bells of Vietnam and now being display in Historical Museum in Ha Noi. Due to a sea storm, the bell was sunk under sea water for hundreds years. It was picked up by fish men in 1958 at the beach of zone 1. It is believed that this bell was made with very high proportion of gold thus made it durable to remain undamaged after hundreds years under seawater, its sound vibrates even very far away.
Historical traces improved that Do Son is a marine base of King Tran. In 1288, there was a fierce navy battle in Nhi Son Tower area, Dai Bang river mouth sunk hundreds of invaders' boats.
In 1741, Do Son was selected as navy camp by Quan He (He Lord), his name is Nguyen Huu Cau raised an army for the war. Buffalo fighting custom (exclusive and unique through out the country) was born based on the normal ceremony for encouraging people and solders.
Van Hoa hotel is situated at the end of Do Son peninsular, it was renovated to become a casino with 100 stone footsteps down to the sea. 4 km toward the sea from this point is Hon Dau lighthouse island. A temple of Nam Hai Than Vuong - a general of Tran's dynasty was located on this tiny island where there is an anniversary every 9 to 10 January. He is the god of luck protecting fish-men during rough sea days. Worshiping brings belief and luck then it empowers spirit of fish-men. Before any sea trip, fish-men usually called at this island to worship for luck and make them confident when at the most dangerous position at sea.
Attractive sightseeing, recreation and entertainment areas in Do Son beach as follows:
• Tuong Long tower, Pearl temple, Dragon stream (the remains of Ly's Dynasty time) in Ngoc Hai ward;
• Ba De temple at the foot of Doc mountain at the end of Xam wharf in Duyen Hai ward;
• Buffalo fighting festival: pre-qualification round held on June of lunar year, the final games held on August 9th of lunar year, at Stadium of the Town;
• Three beaches of Zone I, II, and III: from Dai Duong restaurant in the north of hill 72, we can have a whole view of eastern side of Do Son peninsula.
• Wharf "No number" (unidentified): it is the starting point of "Ho Chi Minh route" at sea for "No number" ships of Vietnamese People's Navy to carry supplies from the North for the South of Vietnam in the war against American. At present the remain parts of the wharf can be seen at the shore of Green Valley at Zone III;
• Do Son Casino: formerly, it was Van Hoa hotel - an old building of European architecture with a nice open area and a helicopter runway.
• Cau Vong market: where you can buy a lot of dried fish, shrimps, tiny shrimps, xa xung, oysters, shrimp paste, shark's fin, conger pike s swimming bladder, su fish.
• Ben Nghieng (sloping quay): at the end of Zone II of Do Son, there are high-speed ferries for tourists to visit Hon Dau isle, Cat Ba island and Ha Long bay.
• Bao Dai villa: on the Vung hill, in 1999, Do Son tourism hotel company invested for rehabilitation of "Dinh Bao Dai" (King Bao Dai s Palace). The palace is of about 1,000 m2 including great lounge where King Bao Dai receipt visitors; bed rooms of Queen Nam Phuong, princes and princesses. There are a dining room, a living room, a reading room, and a wine cellar; Royal Private Kitchen at base floor had been restored to its original state. Visiting here visitors could seat on the throne and try on King s and Queen s costumes
3. Trang Kenh - Bach Dang
A land area, a mountain area, air space "immensely miles of whaling waves, gracefully identical with colour pheasant tails". That is the land of historic relics of Trang Kenh - Bach Dang in the north of Thuy nguyen district, about 20 km from Hai Phong urban areas. It borders Gia river in the south, Chanh river in the East. There are grandiose mountains, harmonizing relics and landscapes.

Nguyen Trai had written about this land: "the rivers exchange relations, waves and water closes sky, the trees cover river banks, it is important and difficult to access in scenery border". Trang Kenh-Bach Dang is the same dazzlingly bright red stamp that is remembered in history, to revive profound pride for our country, glorious feat of arms - three times of victory against the North invaders, and with lively pages about the life of our ancestor in nation building period. Pile combat field relics, caves at the foot of mountain U Bo, mountain Phuong Hoang, hiding place for troops, the place where Tran Hung Dao -Moderation Grand Duke had been drumming for the combat. Tran Quoc Bao temple is still greened with moss. In 1960-1970s, many archaeologist excavated, discovered sepulchers, cooking and over 30 pieces of broken potteries, and the most valuable ones are 3,476 precious stone things. They are tiny and fine axes, the glossy round rings for adornment, it is obvious that Trang Kenh ancient quarry men had achieved the height in stone sculpture art. Since in Hung Vuong time, Trang Kenh people had known how to do farming; animal breeding; fishing; hunting for rhinos, elephants, tigers, wild boars, stags, deers, tortoises, turtles, cotters; making pottery; casting bronze things, so that Thuy Nguyen now have many talented people and famous products.
At present, Trang Kenh-Bach Dang has become north-east industry area of city. There are Trang Kenh factory that exploits limestone mines for production of lime, calcium carbide, and Chinfon cement factory with Peach blossom symbol. At the point where Gia river mouth looking at Bach dang river, it is Pha Rung ship repairing factory built with assistance from Finnish Government. There are modern docks which are accommodating high sea vessels to make them "young" again with ocean.
Reminiscing Trang Kenh-Bach Dang brilliant feat of arms we would find it more respective: "the identical of water and sky, scenery of three autumn seasons, reed side crushed sword", and more sympathizing with Pham Manh Su - pride speech in the 13th century:
"Mountains and rivers bring prosperity for Bach Dang Autumn"
4. Du Hang Pagoda, Hai Phong City
The pagoda was built under the Ly Dynasty. It was later renovated in the 17th century by Nguyen Dinh Sach, an officer of the imperial guard who resigned and became a Buddhist monk. In 1899, during the reign of King Thanh Thai, a monk by the name of Thong Hanh expanded the pagoda and built a bell tower. The existing pagoda resulted from the repair work carried out during that time.
Inside the pagoda are several statues that are intricately engraved in the style of the Nguyen Dynasty. Valuable relics, such as bronze tripods and gongs, are also kept in the pagoda.
5. Haiphong Post Office
In 1875, the French had founded Hai Phong and Quy Nhon Post-office bureau, after opening the similar foundation in Sai Gon, Ha Noi. The first nation stamps of square shape with eagle decoration of every size and type was published in 1864.
In that days the date of letter delivery and receipt used to be seriously carried out. In front of Hai Phong post office, the tri-coloured flags (French flag) in day time and lights at night were hanged on the days letters were sent. When receiving letters the blue flags bordered with red was hanged in Hai Phong's Post office, while it was flags bordered with blue in Central of the country Post offices. Five minutes after being checked, letters were given to postmen. Hai phong-Ha Noi inter-provincial telephone was officially set up in 19th April 1906.
6. Hang Kenh Communal House, Hai Phong City
Hang Kenh Communal House, also referred to as Nhan Tho Communal House in Sino-Vietnamese. Built in 1717, Hang Kenh Communal House was later expanded in 1905. The main front hall, also called “dai dinh”, connects to the back part through a tiled roof bridge.
There are lots of valuable items in the communal house, of which there are 156 pieces with a dragon as the main theme. Altogether, there are 308 dragons of different shapes and sizes. The pagoda also houses a statue of Ngo Quyen and a palanquin.
Every year from the 16th to 18th of the second lunar month, ritual ceremonies, festivals, traditional games and performances of “cheo”, “tuong” and other folk songs are held at the communal house, attracting large crowds.

Every year from the 16th to 18th of the second lunar month, ritual ceremonies, festivals, traditional games and performances of “cheo”, “tuong” and other folk songs are held at the communal house, attracting large crowds.
